Offline Map Layers of the Mapy.cz App
- The button for downloading map layers appears immediately upon the first launch of the app and can later be found in the main menu under "Offline Maps."
- You will see a list of available countries with offline layers. Most countries can be opened to view the available maps of specific territorial units within the country.
- In the "You Might Be Interested In" section at the top, suggestions for map layers in the vicinity based on your detected position will be displayed.
- After selecting a map to download, details about the size of the map being downloaded will be displayed.
- If your device has an SD card or multiple storage options, you can choose where the offline layers will be saved. The app will remember your choice for future downloads and will not ask again.
- Once the download starts, the items being downloaded will be displayed in a queue along with the download progress.
Immediately after downloading, the maps are available for offline use, and no further setup or permissions are required.
Updating Map Layers for the Mapy.cz App
Map updates for the app occur approximately seven times a year.
The app will automatically notify you when an update is ready for download.
Updates are available for all regions worldwide.
The update replaces the map drawings, routing network, search database, and POI database.
There are two types of updates: major and minor. A major update requires all map layers to be updated at once because they are not compatible with the originally downloaded ones. During a minor update, only specific regions can be updated as needed.
In general, we recommend keeping only the essential offline maps in the app. The maps are available for free, meaning you can download and delete them as needed. Always start updates when you have a stable internet connection capable of downloading up to several GB of data!
The app (vector rendering) does not use the same map layers as the web (raster rendering), so there may be slight differences between the two services. Aerial maps are available only online and are updated on a different cycle.
Searching in Offline Maps
The Czech offline search database is limited to the most common queries and data. The app can search for addresses and points of interest (POI) without an internet connection. However, it can only find businesses that are directly marked on the map and have their icon, such as accommodations and ATMs; it cannot find the nearest flower shop. If you are abroad without an internet connection, you can only search for terms and points of interest contained in the downloaded offline map. The currency of the offline search database can vary from weeks to about three months.
Planning Without Internet and Without Offline Maps
If you have not downloaded the necessary offline map layers and are not connected to the internet, you will be notified that an internet connection or the download of offline maps is required to create a plan.
Planning on Offline Maps
You can also plan and navigate using offline maps, but you need to know that planning is only possible with downloaded offline maps.
If you want to plan in offline mode from the Czech Republic to Spain, you need to have the map of France or at least the French regions through which your route will lead downloaded as well.
