Map update intervals

Hi, I would like to check a few things about the map update intervals:

1. How often do general features (e.g. new buildings, roads, paths, etc.) get updated/become visible on Mapy? In FAQ it says "The basic map is usually updated once a week for the Czechia; 1x per month for the rest of the world."

However, I corrected a road name more than 1 month ago, but the change still doesn't seem to be visible in Mapy?

On the other hand, I noticed that basic nodes/single-point POIs inserted on OSM become visible as early as 1-2 days later, which is really impressive!

2. How often do offline maps get updated?

Thanks!

Hello Matic,

please be patient few more days / weeks. We are preparing some optimalization in processes and in future we hope that we will do it even faster than now.

In general we are downloading package from OSM which is published every 14 days and then we are rendering data. For portal it can take 1 month, for app with vector data little bit more. For routing it takes around 14 days.

Yes, POIs are visible quite fast (2-3 days)

We are working on processes that data from OSM should be in mapy.cz in 3 weeks.

Hi Jakub, sounds good, thanks!

"We are working on processes that data from OSM should be in mapy.cz in 3 weeks." -- so this means Mapy will update its online OSM data every 3 weeks for any changes made on OSM (other than POIs which typically get updated within 2 days)?

What about offline maps? Will those also get updated on shorter intervals?

Hi Jakub, it's been almost 1 month since offline maps were updated on mobile devices, yet the data in Web Mapy is still from a few months back. May I know when is an update due for the web version?

The assumption is that the new web tiles will be available tomorrow, September 21. and will contain OSM data until 22.8.
The last update was on 21.7.2022 and has OSM data as of 19.6.

Hello, you are right, we still have one problem with rendering new data, we are still trying to solve this problem, it should be ready in few days/weeks. Sorry for delay. Jakub, mapy.cz

Thanks, looks like the Web maps finally got updated last week.

Is there a chance you could add a small timestamp to denote the date when maps were last updated? (Both to Web and iOS version - with offline maps included.)

It seems that lately new POIs or POI changes no longer appear on Mapy in 1-2 days like before, but it takes more than a week for any POI related changes to show up.

Is that just a temporary issue due to some optimization processes you mentioned above? Or will Mapy even in the future no longer update new POIs in such short intervals as before (in 1-2 days)?

Thanks!

I am also waiting for the POI added on 7.10.2022 to appear.

The pattern I'm currently seeing is that some of my POIs appear after 8 days and some after 11 days or so. I'm starting to realize we were quite spoiled by previous fast updates every 1-2 days... I hope that soon it will be back to that!

Hello, Matic, still not ready optimization.

Je to bieda, chýbajú POI pridané 20.10.2022, to je už 10 dní. Predtým to bolo na 2.-3. deň.

Typically the newly added POIs now take cca. 8-12 days to appear on Mapy from what I can see.

On the other hand, I'm quite disappointed that the general OSM data on the Mobile Mapy app is currently still from late August, while Web Mapy data is slightly newer - from around mid-September. But that's still almost 2 months old already for Web Mapy and almost 3 months for Mobile Mapy. I really hope that in the near future we will see more regular updates for both Web and Mobile apps. Ideally every 2-3 weeks as Jakub mentioned above, or AT LEAST once a month as many other similar apps do.

Matic, sorry my mistake, in apps are not so often like in portal. In portal is around 2 weeks circles. In app is not that often, because then if you have offline data you will need to download new dataset quite often. I asked cartographers when will be new render of vektor data for app - it will be in December. Jakub, mapy.cz

Hi Jakub, I see.

Sure, I understand that a 2 week cycle may be a bit too often for the mobile app - but could you at least try to provide monthly updates like other similar apps do? Currently, the OSM data in Mapy for iOS is from late August - that's almost 3 months old data already... :-( Yet new buildings, roads, hiking paths etc. are added to OSM on a daily basis, so 3 months really seems like an eternity.

Looking forward to the December update.

Prípadne zvoliť najčastejšie používané krajiny a tie aktualizovať mesačne, zvyšok sveta 2 mesačne.

Alternatively, choose the most frequently used countries and update them monthly, the rest of the world every 2 months.

Chýbajú POI od 14.11.2022.
Aký je plán aktualizovania POI? Je to stále chyba, alebo nové pravidlo?

"In app is not that often, because then if you have offline data you will need to download new dataset quite often."

>>> Actually, I think the best way to do it would be to provide at least monthly updates and then allow the users to update whenever they want - because it seems that currently whenever an update of offline maps is available within the app, the app will force you to download it before you can actually use the maps. So instead of that, allow the users to use the older version of maps if they are not in an area with wifi or fast internet speed and let them update whenever they can, or want. Let them use the previous version of offline data without forcing them to update before they could even continue to use the map. You could easily provide, e.g. a red badge on the Settings button in Mapy (and a written notification at the bottom of the screen) to indicate that a map update is available, for example, but also let the user ignore it for the moment and update later.

PS: if some users are complaining about frequent updates - that’s totally their problem. Other users, myself included, who are regular OSM contributors, would on the other hand definitely appreciate more frequent updates.

Aktualizácia POI neprebehla už viac ako 14 dní.
Predtým ste to mali lepšie.

Dobrý den, ano, máte pravdu. Finišujeme se změnou hardware, která umožní se dostat opět na dřívější intervaly. Děkujeme za pochopení. Jakub, mapy.cz
